On April 28 and 29, European Civil Society groups met in Berlin in order to share knowledge and experiences in their respective regions regarding the EU-India FTA and EFTA-India FTA, and also to look at the possibilities for developing common lobbying and campaigning activities. The Mandate must not be misread

To everyone surprise, the Congress (Indira) has got 206 seats; more than one third of the total seats. Along with its allies, it has secured 261 seats; 12 seats short of a majority. Dr. Manmohan Singh is ready to take the top post once again. India voted for a stable and secular government. In no way the mandate given to the Congress (I) should be misunderstood as a mandate for unabated reforms and elitist economic policies.

EU and India prepare for post-election free trade talks

As India prepares for the fourth and last stage of its general election this Wednesday (13 May), its trade negotiators and their counterparts from the European Union are bracing themselves for the next round of talks on a free trade deal, tentatively scheduled for July. Government procurement will be excluded.

Since January 2008, Norway has been negotiating a FTA with India through its membership in EFTA. The next and fourth round of talks is expected in June 2009. Trade negotiations are given little attention by the Norwegian media and no studies have been published on how the most vulnerable groups in Norway will be affected by a treaty. Nevertheless, the expected consequences of a legally binding treaty, both for India’s self-determination and vulnerable social groups’ livelihoods, are very much disturbing.

Philippines President Arroyo on Monday pushed for the speedy negotiation of the Association f Southeast Asian Nations-India FTA to give the region a stronger voice in shaping world economic policies. She expressed hope that the Philippine-Indian business community will make the advocacy among its missions in line with the 60th anniversary of Philippine-Indian relations.

India FTA to lift value to $10 billion

India and Thailand are set to sign by July a long-awaited free trade agreement that could rapidly lift bilateral trade to more than US$10 billion a year. "By June or July this year we should be able to sign the free trade deal with Thailand," said Kamal Nath, India's caretaker commerce minister, at a recent talk in Bangkok.

Chile aims to deepen the preferential trade agreements with India to boost bilateral trade between the two countries, the country's ambassador Alfonso S Navarro said. "There had been some delay due to the elections, but we hope to hold a meeting by August to enhance the list and reduce the tariffs. These steps would help to reach the final FTA," he added.

Public opinion sought on trade pact with India
